Battling to Protect Consumers from Unlawful Betting Practices in Alabama

High Stakes- We are taking a stand against unlawful betting practices by filing a class action lawsuit against Sweepsteaks Limited, the owner of Stake.us, a popular online casino gaming website. The lawsuit seeks damages for Alabama residents who lost money on the platform and calls for a complete ban on Stake.us’s operations in the state.

What’s the Issue?

Stake.us’s operations violate Alabama’s stringent anti-gambling laws, which broadly define gambling as risking something of value on a contest of chance.

The website offers over 200 games of chance, including slot games, scratch cards, poker, and other table games such as blackjack and roulette. Players can win prizes, including cash-equivalent gift cards and cryptocurrency payouts, which can be converted to US currency.

Alabama’s Gambling Laws

The Stake.us platform exploits a legal loophole by not listing Alabama as a restricted area, thereby allowing residents to engage in illegal gambling activities.

Alabama has some of the strictest gambling laws in the United States. The state constitution and various statutes prohibit most forms of gambling, including online casino games, sports betting, and lotteries. The only exceptions are tribal gaming, pari-mutuel betting on horse and dog races, and charitable bingo games.

Local Impact, National Implications

We represent plaintiffs like Laura Hall from Phenix City, who lost money on Stake.us in the past six months. Another resident, J.S., also from Phenix City, suffered losses due to his mother’s gambling on the site. Both believed Stake.us was a legal platform.

The lawsuit highlights the rise in online gambling addiction, comparing it to the opioid crisis. With more people gambling online, the number of Americans diagnosed with gambling addiction has significantly increased.

We are committed to helping those hurt by misleading online gambling practices. The plaintiffs are represented by Beasley Allen’s Dee Miles, Mitch Williams, Leon Hampton, and Paul Evans. Our goal is to hold Stake.us accountable and protect vulnerable people from being exploited. By working together, we aim to make the online space safer and more transparent for everyone.
