Premises Liability & Negligence - Close up of Crime Scene tape

Our Atlanta Lawyers Praise Tribute Honoring Athens, Georgia, Client

If you look around our country, you will find that many streets bear names of influential people or crucial events. Beasley Allen recently had the privilege of representing the family of Auriel “Thumpa” Callaway. She was killed in a shooting at her apartment complex in Athens, Georgia.

In July 2019, a brawl erupted at Clarke Garden Apartments in Athens and stray bullets erupted in every direction, including hitting and killing Thumpa and her unborn child. Thumpa was also holding her three-year-old son’s hand, trying to move him to safety, when she was hit with a fatal bullet.

Two days before Christmas last year, after the community rallied to have Carriage Court renamed, we were thankful and humbled to learn that the road is now appropriately named Thumpa Avenue. Thumpa Avenue is the main road leading into Clarke Garden Apartments where Thumpa lived. Sadly, shootings like these are on the rise. In some instances, there are steps that apartment complex owner/operators can take to make their properties safer for tenants. In those instances, Beasley Allen works to hold landlords liable so that citizens and their guests are kept safe in their own apartments.
