Cooling Concerns: Proposed Class Action Filed Against GM

Beasley Allen has filed a proposed class action lawsuit against General Motors (GM), alleging that certain Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick vehicles contain a defect that can cause coolant leaks and increase the risk of engine problems.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on behalf of a vehicle owner and other consumers who may have been affected by the alleged defect.

What Vehicles Are Included?

According to the complaint, the defect affects:

  • 2023–2026 Chevrolet Colorado
  • 2023–2026 GMC Canyon
  • 2024–2026 Chevrolet Traverse
  • 2024–2026 GMC Acadia
  • 2025–2026 Buick Enclave

These vehicles are equipped with certain turbocharged four-cylinder engines that use a sealed liquid cooling system.

What Is the Alleged Defect?

The lawsuit alleges that a defective radiator hose connection can allow coolant to leak from the vehicles’ cooling systems. Over time, the loss of coolant can affect engine performance and increase the risk of overheating.

Because coolant plays a critical role in regulating engine temperature, even a small leak can lead to larger mechanical problems. Drivers may experience warning lights, reduced power, or other performance issues.

In some cases, the defect can cause vehicles to enter “limp mode” or stall unexpectedly. These failures can leave drivers without adequate warning and may create dangerous situations on busy roads or highways.

Did General Motors Know About the Problem?

A key issue in the lawsuit is whether GM knew about the defect before drivers began experiencing coolant leaks and related engine problems.

The complaint points to several sources that allegedly alerted GM to the issue, including testing conducted before the vehicles were released, warranty repair data, consumer complaints filed with NHTSA, and company service communications.

While GM has provided technical service guidance and special warranty coverage for some vehicles, it has not recalled all affected models or extended warranty protection to every owner impacted by the defect.

Auto Defect Experience and Action

The proposed class action seeks to hold GM accountable for the alleged defect and to obtain relief for consumers who purchased or leased the affected vehicles. The case includes claims for breach of warranty, fraudulent omission, and violations of Georgia consumer protection laws.

Beasley Allen has a long history of representing consumers in automotive defect cases involving vehicle safety, product failures, and manufacturer accountability. The firm has handled cases involving defective engines, airbags, seat belts, fuel systems, and other vehicle components that allegedly placed drivers and passengers at risk.
