Beasley Allen named to Plaintiffs’ Hot List, Jones featured for BP litigation

Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C. has been selected for inclusion on the National Law Journal’s Plaintiffs Hot List, which identifies the most successful practices. To compile the annual list, NLJ asks its readers to nominate firms in the United States that have done “exemplary, cutting-edge work on the plaintiffs’ side.” Criteria for selection includes “at least one significant plaintiffs’ win between June 30, 2011 and July 1, 2012” and “an impressive track record of wins in the past three to five years. Nineteen firms were included on this year’s Plaintiffs’ Hot List.

The magazine included a spotlight of Beasley Allen’s work on BP Oil Spill litigation, led by attorney Rhon Jones, head of the firm’s Toxic Torts section. Jones was selected to serve on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the consolidated multidistrict litigation. He was part of the team that negotiated an estimated $7.8 billion settlement in principle. Any business in the affected areas, including Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and the west coast of Florida, is eligible to file a claim for compensation under the terms of the settlement agreement.

Beasley Allen also was recognized for its work in the area of pharmaceutical litigation. The NLJ cited the firm’s success in Medicaid Fraud / Average Wholesale Price (AWP) litigation, which alleges pharmaceutical companies inflated prices of drugs for which they were reimbursed through state Medicaid program. Beasley Allen has represented or is representing seven states in this litigation. In September 2011, the firm secured a $39.2 million jury verdict against Sandoz Inc. This litigation is being handled by the firm’s Consumer Fraud section.

Beasley Allen’s Mass Torts section also was cited for a December verdict of $72.6 million to three plaintiffs who alleged hormone replacement therapy (HRT) drugs Premarin, Provera and Prempro caused them to develop breast cancer. The Mass Torts section handles cases involving dangerous drugs and defective medical devices.
