Cove dishwashers have a defect causing dishwasher fires.

Mobile Office Investigates Fire Hazard in Home Appliance Cases

Sub-Zero’s high-end Cove dishwashers have a defect that makes them overheat, causing smoke and flames inside the appliance. Beasley Allen’s Mobile office is investigating.

High-end appliance maker Sub-Zero is recalling about 42,000 Cove dishwashers because they pose a fire hazard. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the heating element in the dishwasher can fail to properly shut off. When this happens, the element can overheat. The company has received five reports of burning smells, flames, and smoking inside the Cove dishwashers. Fortunately, consumers have reported no injuries to date. Beasley Allen’s Mobile office is currently looking into cases of fires involving other home appliances.

When you spend a lot of money for a luxury brand appliance, you expect it to be efficient and safe,” said Beasley Allen consumer products attorney Evan Allen. “The Cove dishwasher recall is not only a huge inconvenience to consumers, it puts their homes and lives at risk.

Sub-Zero, which also makes refrigerators and Wolf ranges, added the Cove dishwashers to its lineup of luxury appliances in 2019. The company started the recall on April 26, 2021, with help from the CPSC and Health Canada. Affected products include Cove 24-inch built-in home dishwashers. The recall names model numbers DW2450 and DW2450WS and serial numbers 20000100 through 20044445.

Sub-Zero printed the model number, serial number, and date code on the product rating plate inside the dishwasher. “Cove” is printed on the outside of the door and on the far right side of the control panel on the top of the unit’s door.

Affected dishwashers were sold nationwide, as well as in Canada and Mexico. They were sold from February 2018, before the product was officially launched, through May 2021 for between $2,400 and $2,500.

Sub-Zero told consumers with affected Cove dishwashers to stop using them and unplug them from the power source. They should then contact a Cove service representative to set up an inspection and repair.
