MONTGOMERY, ALA. (May 28, 2009) – Eight Beasley Allen attorneys were selected for inclusion on the 2009 Super Lawyers list, a designation earned by fewer than five percent of lawyers in the state. Additionally, the firm’s founding shareholder, Jere L. Beasley, earned the additional distinction of being named among the Top 10 Lawyers in the state.
The Super Lawyer designation is based on peer recognition and personal achievement, and involves a statewide nomination process, independent research on each candidate, and peer evaluation by practice area. Criteria that factors into the selection process include verdicts, settlements, transactions, representative clients, experience, honors and awards, special licenses and certifications, position within the law firm, bar or other professional activity; pro bono and community service, scholarly lectures and writings, education and employment background, and other outstanding achievements.
Beasley Allen Super Lawyers 2009 are:
Jere L. Beasley, Founding Shareholder – The impact that Jere Locke Beasley has had on the profession of law, not to mention politics, governmental affairs and public opinion in the state of Alabama and beyond, cannot be underestimated. Consistently regarded among the “Top” in his profession, Mr. Beasley has practiced law as an advocate for victims of wrongdoing since 1962. In 1979, he founded the firm that is now known as Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., in Montgomery, Alabama. Beasley Allen is one of the country’s leading firms involved in civil litigation on behalf of claimants, having represented hundreds of thousands of people, and Jere Beasley is arguably the most successful trial attorney in the country. Beasley has been named to Super Lawyers in 2008 and 2009, both times in the Top 10.
J. Greg Allen, Shareholder – Allen was named to Super Lawyers in 2008 and again this year. In addition to his most recent success, he has tried cases which have resulted in verdicts of $114.5 million, $26.25 million, $13.5 million, $12 million and $11.75 million. He has had a number of eight-figure settlements and many seven-figure verdicts and settlements. In 2007 Allen settled two cases for severely injured clients where the total of the two settlements exceeded $30 million. He was the lead attorney in a claim against General Motors, in which the jury, after two weeks of trial, awarded $122 million for his client, a brain-damaged child. The case later settled for a confidential amount. The National Law Journal featured this case as one of its top ten verdicts. Allen has taught products liability at a number of seminars and at his alma mater, Jones Law School, which recently honored him by naming their mock trial competition, “The J. Greg Allen Trial Competition.”
Thomas J. Methvin, Managing Shareholder – Methvin was selected to Super Lawyers in 2008 and again this year. In July, he will assume the role of President of the Alabama State Bar. Since 1998, he has been the managing shareholder of the firm. He helped organize the firm into sections based on types of cases. This has allowed our lawyers to concentrate in certain areas and to be on the cutting edge in their field. He has helped Beasley Allen become a national powerhouse in representing victims of wrongdoing. He was the lead lawyer in a landmark predatory lending case involving a door-to-door sales and finance scam. The verdict of $581 million is the largest predatory lending verdict in American history. In July of 2007, Methvin was featured in Fortune Magazine as one of America’s Premier Lawyers.
W. Daniel “Dee” Miles, III, Shareholder – Miles joined the firm in 1991 and has not only been a pioneer of consumer fraud and commercial litigation nationwide, he has demonstrated great leadership resulting in the firm’s numerous record-setting verdicts for clients in many areas of law. In addition to representing clients in litigation, he manages the entire Consumer Fraud / Commercial Litigation Section of the firm. He is currently serving as lead counsel for the State of Alabama against 73 pharmaceutical companies accused of defrauding the state Medicaid system. Twenty-two other states have filed similar suits against the same pharmaceutical companies, and Miles is representing seven states in this litigation, currently working on behalf of Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Alaska, Hawaii, Utah and Kansas. Miles has recently been named as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in America by the American Trial Lawyers Association, and in 2008 he was named “Litigator of the Year” for Beasley Allen.
J. Cole Portis, Shareholder – Portis, an AV rated lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell, serves as Section Head of our Product Liability/Personal Injury Section. He represents mothers who lost their daughters, spouses who lost their life-long mates, and injured children who will never be able to care for themselves as they grow into adulthood. Unreasonably dangerous and defective products caused these unnecessary deaths and injuries. Instead of placing profits above safety, Cole’s hope is that manufacturers of consumer products will carefully engineer and manufacture safe products so that innocent victims won’t be hurt or killed. Among the cases currently being investigated in this section are Yamaha Rhino rollovers, single vehicle accidents resulting from defective products, 18-wheeler crashes, and roof-crush cases.
Rhon E. Jones, Shareholder – After serving as law clerk for U.S. District Judge Robert Varner, Jones began practice in Birmingham with the firm of Starnes & Atchison. He joined Beasley Allen in 1994 and now manages the Toxic Torts section of the firm, as well as maintaining an active practice in predatory lending and class action litigation. He is currently involved in toxic exposure cases in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri and New Jersey. Among the cases Jones’ section is now investigating is the Coal Ash Spill at a Kingston, Tenn., TVA power plant last December, which dumped 1.1 billion gallons of toxic coal ash sludge over 300 acres; and Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, which store petroleum and other hazardous substances and which, when compromised, create contamination that may damage the environment and pose a hazard to human health.
Andy D. Birchfield, Jr., Shareholder – Andy Birchfield exemplifies the values that have made Beasley Allen one of the country’s leading firms in civil litigation. Birchfield’s commitment to his clients, his indefatigable work ethic, his integrity, his honesty, and his excellent skills as a trial lawyer have resulted in extraordinary success since he launched Beasley Allen’s mass tort practice. Birchfield, along with other members of Beasley Allen, has successfully resolved claims for thousands of clients in the Vioxx, Baycol, Rezulin, PPA and Ephedra litigations. Among the cases currently being investigate by the mass torts section are Reglan, which has been linked to a syndrome called tardive dyskinesia, resulting in involuntary muscle movements including lip smacking, tongue thrusting, eye blinking and bulging, head jerking, facial grimacing and puckering and pursing of the lips; and cases involving pain pumps, which when used incorrectly cause chondrolysis, degeneration of the cartilage in the shoulder or knee joint, resulting in permanent disability.
C. Gibson Vance, Shareholder – Vance practices in the firm’s Consumer Fraud section. He is heavily involved in the American Association for Justice, and was recently elected Vice President, one of six officers representing AAJ’s 60,000 members nationwide. He also serves as Co-Chairman for the National Finance Committee for AAJ, as well as on a number of committees including Budget, Legal Affairs, Marketing-Client Services, Membership Oversight, Public Affairs and Key Person Committee. Gibson was recently presented with The Joe Tonahill Award by the AAJ’s New Lawyers Division. He received this award for his outstanding, dedicated services to and support of consumers and the trial bar. Vance also serves as host of the weekly “LawCall” program on WSFA, which provides viewers an opportunity to call in live and ask legal questions.
