Beasley Allen lawyer Joseph VanZandt organized a Vaping Awareness Town Hall event June 13, 2019, for area parents and teachers to learn more about these dangerous devices. Vaping has become an epidemic among young people, with a staggering 78% increase in high school use since 2017. Special guest Dr. Carla J. Berg of Emory University’s Winship Cancer Center, VanZandt and Beasley Allen lawyer Andy Birchfield shared information about the excessive levels of addictive nicotine in vape devices. They also discussed the slick marketing vape manufacturers – especially JUUL – used to hook young users. In researching the issue, VanZandt says, “we’ve learned so much that we’ve really become passionate about this issue and that’s part of our obligation to the community here in Montgomery – we want to share what we’ve learned with parents and with teachers in this area.” The event was free, and open to parents, school administrators and teachers, and young people.
