Larry Golston, a lawyer in Beasley Allen’s Consumer Fraud Section, was featured on CBS’s Whistleblower program June 14, about handling a case on behalf of Barry Taul. Taul exposed an elaborate illegal kickback and false billing scheme between the Alabama Organ Center and Abanks Mortuary & Crematory and its owner, Jed Nagel. The scheme defrauded taxpayers $60,000 a month for approximately eight years. As a result of his bravery, Taul was physically assaulted, he and his family received death threats and Nagel lied about him to future employers. The jury found numerous violation of the False Claims Act and the Anti-Kickback Statute, resulting in damages totaling $14.7 million. As a whistleblower, Taul is entitled to 27.5 percent of the proceeds of the lawsuit. The Taul case was one of two whistleblower stories featured on the program. If you missed it, you can watch anytime on CBS All Access (subscription service but there is a free trial available), or check with your cable provider for options to watch OnDemand.
