BP Oil Spill settlement explained by Beasley Allen attorney Rhon Jones

| Toxic Exposure, Environmental Disasters

Ringler Radio host Larry Cohen talks to Beasley Allen attorney Rhon Jones, one of the 15-member Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee working on the multidistrict litigation surrounding the BP oil spill. In April 2010, BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers , injuring others and setting off a massive oil spill. The BP oil spill released more than 200 million gallons of crude oil across the Gulf Coast, creating one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. BP recently agreed to settle the class action of certain oil spill related claims. “We think (the settlement) is a big victory for Gulf Coast workers, businesses, families. We think it’s going to provide more transparency than there was before and people are going to have confidence in it because it’s court supervised,” Jones says. He notes that arriving at a settlement in less than two years from the date of the spill is a significant accomplishment that will speed relief to those harmed by the spill.
