Beasley Allen attorney Roger Smith visits the Beasley Allen Report on this week’s episode to speak about antidepressants and how their widespread usage is exposing thousands to their dangerous, life-threatening side-effects such as birth defects. A graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, Mr. Smith has been working within the pharmaceutical mass tort division of Beasley Allen since 2001. According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one in 10 people older than age 12 in the United States take antidepressants, and more than half of them are women. The increased role drugs are playing in today’s society is due to the “fast track” approval process that has been putting brand-new drugs in the unknowing hands of the public. Also, marketing has begun taking a key role in drug company revenue. Doctors are pressured to prescribe new drugs to their patients despite not being positive about what adverse side effects could occur. Now, there is a larger amount of people being prescribed the drug than originally tested in clinical studies, leaving much of the public to become the drug company’s test subjects.
