Skylar Sawyer is an attorney in the firm’s Mobile office where she is a member of the Mass Torts Section.
Skylar is part of the litigation team investigating claims by Zantac users who developed certain types of cancers after taking the drug including liver, bladder, stomach, colon, kidney and pancreatic cancer.
Skylar has always strived to help her community and promote the public’s interest. After college, she worked in municipal and district courts as a court referral officer. Following this introduction to court diversionary programs and community outreach, Skylar became a Juvenile Probation Officer.
She assisted in grant research, community stakeholder coordination, and resource allocation for various diversion programs, including the Youth Advocate Program. Most importantly, Skylar helped oversee at-risk youth compliance with the court system and coordinated valuable positive reinforcing opportunities for at-risk youth. Skylar continues to see the benefits of her past work when she receives updates from kids who were once deemed delinquent and now are on promising career paths and fulfilling their dreams.
While attending law school, Skylar continued to serve the public while gaining experience in the legal field. She was a student aide in the Civil Administrative Division of the Alabama Attorney General’s Office and later interned with the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission. Skylar served as the student representative for the Montgomery Bar Association’s Volunteer Lawyers program and helped coordinate charity events and public benefit efforts as President of her law school’s Public Interest Law Foundation as a 3L.
Before joining Beasley Allen, Skylar obtained valuable experience in diverse areas of law. She prosecuted cases as an Assistant District Attorney in the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office for the 28th Judicial Circuit. She also worked for another plaintiffs’ law firm in Daphne, Alabama.
In her free time, she enjoys kayaking, ballroom dancing, and spending time with her Brittany spaniel, Zoey.
Skylar is a member of the Alabama State Bar, the Baldwin County Bar Association, the Mobile Bar Association, the American Association for Justice (AAJ) and the American Bar Association.
Skylar enjoys working with various organizations providing mentorship and services to the at-risk youth of Baldwin County. She also volunteers with the South Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program.
Mobile lawyer finds inspiration working with families who need helpBefore Skylar Sawyer became an attorney, she worked as a probation officer in juvenile court in Baldwin County. Helping children and their families navigate the legal mechanisms in court became a passion of hers and ultimately led her to pursue law.
After graduating, she knew Beasley Allen was the perfect place for her to practice pharmaceutical law because of the firm’s devotion to public interest. “I just thought a firm started by people that care so much must be a really good experience,” she says. “And it is.”
