DePuy recalls hip replacement parts

In August, DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, announced the recall of parts used in its ASR hip implant systems. The parts are used for hip replacement surgeries. Patients who received these parts are experiencing problems with pain, swelling and problems walking. Persistent symptoms may be a sign of serious problems, including loosening, dislocation and fracture at and around the hip implant site. As a result, patients are forced to undergo a much higher than usual rate of repeat surgeries. It is estimated the recall will affect as many as 93,000 people.
