Excavator Couplers
What are the dangers associated with excavator coupler defects?
We have represented construction workers who were crushed on the job when an excavator bucket released from a large excavator and fell on them. Workers involved in this type of accident may be trapped under the bucket and then suffer through a lengthy extrication process, and sustain serious crushing injuries. Sometimes, this results in amputation and long-term effects from internal injuries.
Unfortunately, these incidents are far from uncommon. In fact, one OSHA inspector stated that nationwide there have been 15 such tragedies in the past 5 years, 13 involving deaths.
Often, a manufacturer will claim operator error when an accident like this happens. But simple design changes could completely prevent this type failure from occurring in the first place. In fact, we have learned that several manufacturers have already recognized the hazard and implemented such changes in their products. However, some still put profit over people and refuse to implement changes that would save lives.
