The Montgomery County Bar Association (MCBA) will join the Alabama State Bar again this year in celebrating National Pro Bono Week. The event is set for October 23-29, 2011. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a proclamation recognizing Pro Bono Week, saying “a huge unmet need for civil legal assistance remains for disadvantaged Alabamians.” National Pro Bono Week was established in 2009 by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange was the featured speaker at the annual Bench & Bar Conference of the Montgomery County Bar Association. The event was held Friday, October 14, at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at Capitol Hill in Prattville. Strange delivered the keynote address followed by a panel discussion on the topic “What Most Attorneys Don’t Know, But Need to Know.”

Beasley Allen Shareholder Navan Ward is currently serving as the 2011-2012 Minority Caucus Chair for the American Association for Justice. Established in 1992, the Minority Caucus is responsible for recommending and developing educational opportunities, networking programs and other activities of special interest to AAJ members of color. The Caucus helps to develop programs to stimulate minority membership and participation in leadership roles. It also works on joint programs with other AAJ Sections and special interest groups.

Ward takes the office following his professional colleague at Beasley Allen, Larry Golston, who served as ALA President June 2010-2011.

Beasley Allen Law Firm presented a Wii gaming system to the Carver Elementary Arts Magnet School on Wednesday, May 11. The presentation continues Beasley Allen’s “Wii Give Back!” campaign, which last year donated a Wii gaming system to a deserving organization each month all year long. In 2011, the firm will donate the systems based on special needs and requests.

The membership, along with community leaders, enjoyed a fun-filled Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5, with a Mexican fiesta featuring food, music and exciting prizes, all to benefit the One Place Family Justice Center. The event raised more than $35,000!

On March 22, the law firm of Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., announced the beginning of a four-week project to create a youth entrepreneurship program in West Montgomery in conjunction with Common Ground Montgomery (CGM). The program included the renovation of a 4,300-square-foot double storefront building on Mobile Road, adjacent to the organization's existing facility. Today, this project comes to fruition with the opening of the Common Ground Montgomery Annex, which will house the Urban SEED X-change.
