WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Baby Matters LLC, of Berwyn, Pa., is announcing the voluntary recall of 30,000 Nap Nanny(r) portable baby recliners. CPSC is investigating a report of a 4-month-old girl from Royal Oak, Mich. who died in a Nap Nanny(r) that was being used in a crib. According to preliminary reports, the infant was in her harness and found hanging over the side of the product, caught between the Nap Nanny(r) and the crib bumper.
Eighteen-year-old Jacob has experienced more than his share of medical problems. But the latest issues he blames on switching from the anti-seizure drug Keppra to a generic equivalent. Generic medications are tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure the active ingredient is equivalent to the brand name drug. However, subtle differences in the inactive ingredients, such as dyes and fillers, can have dramatic effects on some individuals, especially those with neurological problems.
The quality of over-the-counter diarrhea and heartburn medicines such as Imodium, Mylanta and Pepcid may be compromised, according to a report released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The preliminary report is based on a series of FDA investigations into Johnson & Johnson's Lancaster, N.J., factory, which found a pattern of "ignoring rules for manufacturing and quality, failure to investigate problems that could affect the composition of products, carelessness in cleaning and maintaining equipment, and shoddy record-keeping," according to the Associated Press. In some cases, the report states, batches of medicine made during equipment failures were not checked for quality.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited Rexnord Industries LLC with $130,500 in proposed penalties for violations of federal workplace safety standards after a mechanical power press began to operate unexpectedly, severing the arm of a female employee. Many times when investigators look into a personal injury claim, they find a defective product is to blame. This is especially true in the case of workers injured on the job. What might initially appear to be a worker's compensation claim might turn out to be a case involving a dangerous product or piece of equipment, about which employers should have been aware.
Switching from a brand name medication to a generic is OK in most situations, according to The University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey; however, epileptics should check with their primary care physicians before taking or receiving any generic substitutions. For this population, even subtle changes in medication can cause the patient to suffer more seizures. A return of seizures can result in a loss of driving privileges and could impair employment or school.
Perdue Farms, Inc., a Perry, Ga. establishment, is recalling approximately 91,872 pounds of frozen chicken nugget products that may contain foreign materials. The recall involves the 1-pound, 13-ounce bag of GREAT VALUE Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets. This product is available at Walmart stores.
Sample blister packs of the blood thinner Coumadin distributed to doctors throughout the United States are being recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a precautionary measure because some of the tablets, over time, may not meet the specification for isopropanol. Isopropanol is used to maintain the active ingredient, Coumadin, in the crystalline state, and could affect the therapeutic levels of the active ingredient.
Nearly half of patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy were seizure free at one year with Keppra-only therapy, according to a real-life retrospective audit presented at the 9th European Congress on Epileptology. Keppra, a brand name drug available in generic forms under the name levetiracetam, is an FDA-approved anti-seizure drug used to treat seizures in epileptics and traumatic brain injury patients.
People who suffer from epilepsy are often told they cannot do things. But high school student Connor Doran found something he could do that would also help decrease the stress in his life - indoor kite flying. "Basically, instead of flying with wind, you fly with movement," said Connor, just before he took the stage in front of judges for this season's America's Got Talent.
More external defibrillators/monitors are being recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because of a failure on the power supply that can render the device unable to deliver lifesaving therapy. The Class 1 recall includes 42,943 LIFEPAK 20 and LIFEPAK 20e external defibrillators/Monitors manufactured by Physio-Control, Inc. between July 31, 2002 and September 19, 2007, and distributed to customers between September 16, 2002 and September 27, 2007.
