Toyota has announced another recall, this time of its RAV4 and Highlander SUV vehicles. The manufacturer issued the recall after reports that the side curtain airbags may inadvertently deploy as a result of a problem with electronic sensors. The recall involves just over 200,000 RAV4s from the 2007-2008 model years and 94,000 Highlander and Highlander HV hybrids from 2008. Toyota notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the recall on April 21.
The airbag involved in this recall is a curtain shield airbag, installed just above the driver and passenger side windows. It is designed to protect passengers against head injury in the event of a rollover crash. The NHTSA has recorded eight complaints from vehicle owners reporting inadvertent airbag deployment. Some incidents involve minor injuries.
This recall involves vehicles sold in the United States. The manufacturer will begin notifying customers with vehicles involved in the recall beginning in May. Owners should take their vehicle to a dealer where the defective sensors will be replaced free of charge.
