The River Region Citizen of the Year is organized by a volunteer committee and supported by March of Dimes staff. It is attended by many state and local corporate and civic leaders. The majority of funds are raised through corporate sponsorships, and Fund the Mission. Money raised by the March of Dimes River Region Citizen of the Year will fund medical research, programs of community service, education and advocacy to help the March of Dimes achieve its mission of preventing premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality.

Past Honorees for the event include:

  • 2013, Laura and Barrie Harmon
  • 2012, Lynn Beshear
  • 2011, Doctor Jacks Hawkins
  • 2010, Judge Charles Price
  • 2009, First Lady Patsy Riley
  • 2008, Charles Jinright
  • 2007, Morris Dees
  • 2006, Jere Locke Beasley
  • 2005, Dr. John Ed Mathison
  • 2004, Mayor Todd Strange

In Alabama, 60,050 are born each year. Of those, 9,360 babies are born prematurely (before 37 weeks gestation), and 1,820 babies are born with a birth defect. Premature birth is the leading cause of infant death; and 50 percent of those preterm births are for unknown reasons.

No one is working harder than the March of Dimes to give EVERY BABY a healthy, fighting chance at life. With your help, they work to improve the health of babies and support families if something does go wrong.
