Similac infant formula recalled due to beetles, larvae in powder

Certain Similac-brand infant formulas are being recalled because the powder may contain beetles or their larvae, which can upset tiny tummies if the small insect parts are consumed. Abbott, the formula’s manufacturer, says the possibility that the products contain the small, common beetle is remote, but they are recalling numerous lots of the baby formula as a precaution.

The recalled powdered formulas were sold in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean. The affected lots include certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers, and certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

The recall does not affect Abbott’s liquid infant formulas, such as liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care Alimentum®, Elecare®, Similac Expert Care Neosure®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.

The long list of lots included in the recall can be found on Abbott’s website.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is the possibility that babies who consume the tainted products could experience gastrointestinal discomfort and refuse to eat because small insect parts are irritating their gentle gastrointestinal tracts. Babies with symptoms that persist for more than a few days should be seen by a physician.

Products from the affected lots should be returned to Abbott at no cost to the consumer. For information on how to return recalled products, visit Abbott’s website at http://www.similac.com/recall
