Bulk cartons of cucumbers are being recalled by Raleigh, N.C.-based L&M Companies, Inc., because they could be contaminated with salmonella. The recall includes 1,590 bulk cartons of cucumbers distributed between March 30 and April 7 to New York, Florida, Illinois, Tennessee, Mississippi, Nebraska, Texas and Wyoming. The recalled cartons are marked with the name Nature’s Delight and contain the lot # PL-RID-002990 on the side.
The nationwide recall was ordered following a mid-April inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which identified salmonella on a randomly selected sample of cucumbers in a cooler at Four Seasons Produce of Central Florida. L&M issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”
Salmonella is a bacteria that causes infection. Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.
However, in some people, such as young children and the elderly, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Some people may experience problems for months after infection, and a small number may develop Reiter’s syndrome, which involves pain in their joints, irritation of the eyes, and painful urination.
