What is Ortho Evra?

Ortho Evra (norelgestromin / ethinyl estradiol transdermal system) is manufactured by (Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) is the first transdermal (skin) patch approved by the FDA for birth control in November, 2001. Ortho Evra has been prescribed to millions of women.

What is Ortho Evra prescribed for?

Like birth control pills, Ortho Evra is effective for prevention of pregnancy when used as directed. The weekly prescription patch releases norelgestromin (a progestin hormone), and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen hormone), through the skin and into the blood stream.The patch is a one-and-three-quarter inch square consisting of three layers. The hormones are embedded in the adhesive layer and are slowly released when the patch is applied to the skin.

What are the dangers associated with Ortho Evra?

Ortho Evra releases the hormones estrogen and progestin. These hormones are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, as opposed to ingesting them into the body, as with the traditional birth control pill. This causes an increased exposure to estrogen up to 60%, putting users at a greater risk of developing dangerous adverse effects including blood clots, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and/or death.

On July 17, 2005 a sealed FDA report obtained by the Associated Press indicated that 12 women have died from blood clots that formed as a result of using the Ortho Evra birth control patch. The report also indicated that dozens more had developed blood clots but were fortunate enough to survive. The FDA also found that women using the Ortho Evra birth control patch while pregnant faced an increased risk of birth defects.

In November 2005, the FDA alerted consumers and health care providers about the problems associated with the Ortho Evra birth control patch and forced Ortho-McNeil to strengthen the drug’s warning label.
