For years, drug companies touted the benefits of HRT. Marketing campaigns for medications like Premarin, Prempro and Provera targeted both women and their doctors, promising that the drugs could perform miracles. Manufacturers boasted these drugs could not only temper bothersome symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness, but they had the added benefit of protecting women against heart disease, a serious concern among older women. Use of these drugs was even encouraged for off-label uses, including the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

Navan Ward, Jr., President of the Alabama State Bar’s Young Lawyers Section, presented a check for $1,000 to representatives of the Alabama State Bar (ASB) Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP). The money was collected by the Alabama Young Lawyers Section (AL YLS) during its annual fundraising activities. The VLP was chosen in recognition of its work with victims of the devastating 2011 tornados that ripped through much of Northeast Alabama.

MONTGOMERY, ALA. (January 23, 2012) – Navan Ward, Jr., a shareholder with Montgomery based law firm Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C. has been selected to serve on the Plaintiffs Steering Committee for multidistrict litigation (MDL) surrounding the DePuy Pinnacle hip implant. The litigation involves more than 500 cases consolidated under Judge James E. Kinkeade in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Pinnacle litigation involves allegations of serious adverse events associated with the Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System, a metal-on-metal hip implant. DePuy Orthopaedics is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Beasley Allen Shareholder Navan Ward is currently serving as the 2011-2012 Minority Caucus Chair for the American Association for Justice. Established in 1992, the Minority Caucus is responsible for recommending and developing educational opportunities, networking programs and other activities of special interest to AAJ members of color. The Caucus helps to develop programs to stimulate minority membership and participation in leadership roles. It also works on joint programs with other AAJ Sections and special interest groups.

Ward is one of 19 lawyers selected to oversee the consolidated litigation as part of the Plaintiffs Steering Committee (PSC).

It was announced this weekend that federal cases involving defective hip implant parts manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, will be consolidated in federal court in the Northern District of Ohio under U.S. District Judge David A. Katz. The hip implant parts were recalled August 26 after research indicated patients who received the parts required a much higher than usual rate of revision surgeries.
