Beasley Allen lawsuit calls blood supply safety into question
MONTGOMERY, ALA. (May 14, 2012) – Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., has filed a lawsuit on behalf of man who received blood infected with HIV during a coronary bypass surgery. As a result of receiving the HIV-positive blood, Howard Midkiff contracted HIV. As a result, he will have to take medication and treatment for the rest of his life. The lawsuit names LifeSouth Community Blood Centers as the defendant in this case.
Beasley Allen's Leigh O'Dell named to Plaintiffs' Steering Committee in transvaginal mesh litigation
Beasley Allen attorney Leigh O’Dell has been selected to serve on the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee for consolidated Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) concerning transvaginal mesh. Transvaginal mesh is used to repair conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The mesh is implanted through the vagina and is used to shore up pelvic organs that have become displaced due to age, childbirth, hysterectomy or obesity.

Beasley Allen attorney secures $2.3 million jury verdict for plaintiffs harmed by landfill
LEE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA – (April 2, 2012) Beasley Allen attorney William E. Hopkins, Jr., along with co-counsel Gary Poliakoff, secured a $2.3 million verdict from a South Carolina jury on behalf of Bishopville area residents harmed by a huge landfill in Lee County. The jury found in favor of the plaintiffs against Lee County Landfill SC LLC, a division of waste management company Republic Services, holding the company responsible for “nuisance landfill odors that affect people’s enjoyment of their property.”

ASB Young Lawyers Section presents $1,000 grant to Volunteer Lawyers Program
Navan Ward, Jr., President of the Alabama State Bar’s Young Lawyers Section, presented a check for $1,000 to representatives of the Alabama State Bar (ASB) Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP). The money was collected by the Alabama Young Lawyers Section (AL YLS) during its annual fundraising activities. The VLP was chosen in recognition of its work with victims of the devastating 2011 tornados that ripped through much of Northeast Alabama.

The litigation involves more than 500 cases consolidated under Judge James E. Kinkeade in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Pinnacle litigation involves allegations of serious adverse events associated with the Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System, a metal-on-metal hip implant. DePuy Orthopaedics is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.
