ASB Young Lawyers Section presents $1,000 grant to Volunteer Lawyers Program

Navan Ward, Jr., President of the Alabama State Bar’s Young Lawyers Section, presented a check for $1,000 to representatives of the Alabama State Bar (ASB) Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP). The money was collected by the Alabama Young Lawyers Section (AL YLS) during its annual fundraising activities. The VLP was chosen in recognition of its work with victims of the devastating 2011 tornados that ripped through much of Northeast Alabama.

Beasley Allen attorney Navan Ward to help lead Pinnacle hip implant litigation

MONTGOMERY, ALA. (January 23, 2012) – Navan Ward, Jr., a shareholder with Montgomery based law firm Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C. has been selected to serve on the Plaintiffs Steering Committee for multidistrict litigation (MDL) surrounding the DePuy Pinnacle hip implant. The litigation involves more than 500 cases consolidated under Judge James E. Kinkeade in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Pinnacle litigation involves allegations of serious adverse events associated with the Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System, a metal-on-metal hip implant. DePuy Orthopaedics is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Trial Court awards $38.2 million to the State of Mississippi in Beasley Allen Medicaid fraud lawsuit

MONTGOMERY, ALA. (September 2, 2011) – Today Judge Thomas L. Zebert found in favor of the State of Mississippi in its case against pharmaceutical company Sandoz, Inc. in the Chancery Court of Rankin County, Mississippi, and awarded a total verdict of $38,191, 427.00. The case, Mississippi Medicaid Pharmaceutical Average Wholesale Price Litigation (Master Docket No. 65586-65632, 66312, 66313, 66314) involves allegations that Sandoz caused to be published inflated “Average Wholesale Prices” (AWPs) for the drugs manufactured by Sandoz, which resulted in the Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM) reimbursing pharmacies at an inflated price, all allegedly in violation of the Mississippi Consumer Protection Act; the Mississippi Medicaid Fraud Control act and common law fraud. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood authorized the filing of these lawsuits against the pharmaceutical companies and Beasley Allen attorneys W. Daniel “Dee” Miles, III and Clay Barnett, along with former Mississippi Governor Ronnie Musgrove from Copeland, Cook, Taylor and Bush tried the three-week trial in April.

Established in 1992, the Minority Caucus is responsible for recommending and developing educational opportunities, networking programs and other activities of special interest to AAJ members of color.
