In what may be one of the most bizarre automobile recalls ever, Mazda Motor Corp. announced on Thursday that it is recalling more than 65,000 of its Mazda6 cars due to … spiderwebs. Apparently, a particular type of spider called the Yellow Sac spider likes to make its home in the fuel hoses of this particular model. Spiderwebs constructed in the hoses could possibly restrict the vehicle’s vent line, which could cause the emissions control system to increase pressure in the fuel tank and possibly causing fuel leaks. This particular type of spider creates a web more like a small sac, more dense than a regular spider web, which is what causes the problem.
The problem appears to be limited to the Mazda6 vehicle. The recall includes automobiles in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Mazda Motor Corp. says it has received no reports of serious incidents associated with the arachnid infestation. Experts are not sure why only the Mazda6 model seems to be affected by the spiders.
Auto dealers alerted the manufacturer to the issue, reporting more than 20 cases of spider infestation in 2009 and 2010 models of the Mazda6. Mazda Motor Corp. will notify owners of recalled cars this month. Owners should take them to the dealership to have the fuel lines inspected and cleaned if necessary. Dealers also will install a spring that should prevent spiders like the Yellow Sac from entering the vent line in the future.
