Jere Beasley of Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., and Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. are co-counsel in a massive PCB lawsuit pending in Federal Court in Birmingham, AL. When having learned of a lawsuit been filed by Solutia Inc., and Pharmacia Corp., in Anniston, AL, against a number of companies Mr. Beasley stated:
“I was shocked to learn that Solutia, Inc. and Pharmacia Corp. had filed a lawsuit against 19 or 20 companies in the Anniston area they claim to have contributed to the massive environmental contamination in Anniston. To put things in context, yesterday we were in lengthy settlement negotiations with Solutia, Monsanto Co., Pharmacia, and Pfizer, Inc., in Atlanta, Ga. While the settlement negotiations are confidential, I can say without reservation that I totally was shocked to learn today that Solutia had filed this lawsuit. Monsanto, Solutia, Pharmacia Corp., and indirectly Pfizer have tremendous legal exposure to tens of thousands of residents in the Anniston area because of what Monsanto has done. For years Monsanto hid their evil deeds from the public. During that time, the top officials at Monsanto knew PCBs caused severe liver, cancer, neurological problems, as well as other serious diseases. As a result, Monsanto was responsible for thousands of deaths in the Anniston area. It is highly significant that Monsanto is the only company in the country that has ever manufactured PCBs. This is undisputed and cannot be challenged by any of the companies involved.
“I am not sure what the motives of Solutia Inc. and Pharmacia Corp. were in filing this lawsuit. I can only say that this action by two Defendants in our case in Federal Court against these other corporations will not stop our lawsuit. We will prove some of the worst corporate conduct that I have ever experienced in my legal career. There are 18,000 clients who have been hurt and damaged, and who depend on us. We don’t plan on letting them down.”
