Harley Davidson recalls motorcycles for brake problem

Date: October 26th, 2011

Harley Davidson Inc. has issued a recall on more than 250,000 motorcycles in the United States, and an additional 50,000 outside the U.S., to fix a problem with the rear brake-light switch. The recall affects certain touring motorcycles, as well as trikes and models from the manufacturer’s Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO). Model years affected by the recall include 2009-2012. The recall is expected to begin Oct. 31.

Harley Davidson says the problem is with the rear brake-light switch, which may be damaged by heat from the motorcycles’ exhaust system. This may cause the switch to fail to activate the brake light during braking, or activate it when the brake has not been applied. It may also lead to a leak in brake fluid, which could keep the rear brake from working properly. These are all dangerous circumstances that could possibly lead to a crash.
