National Pro Bono Week celebration recognizes the efforts of lawyers to provide free civil legal assistance to the poor who would otherwise not have access to justice

MONTGOMERY, ALA. (October 25, 2010) – This week the Montgomery County Commission presented an official proclamation declaring Oct. 24-30, 2010, as Pro Bono Week in Montgomery County, Ala. The resolution was sponsored by Commission Ham Wilson, Jr. The recognition is part of Alabama’s activities in celebration of National Pro Bono Week, established by the American Bar Association in 2009 to recognize the efforts of lawyers to provide free civil legal assistance to people in poverty who would otherwise not have access to justice. Pro Bono Week activities in Alabama are sponsored by the Alabama State Bar and its Pro Bono Celebration Task Force, with support of local bar associations statewide.

Earlier this month, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange also presented a proclamation officially recognizing Oct. 24-30 as Pro Bono Week in the City of Montgomery.

Pro Bono Week 2010 will feature legal aid clinics throughout the state, assisting Alabamians who greatly need legal assistance but cannot afford to pay for that help. There also will be service projects throughout the state to help lawyers and law students make volunteer connections with legal aid organizations serving Alabamians.

“It is a charge and responsibility of the practice of law that ‘lawyers render service,'” says Beasley Allen attorney LaBarron Boone. “Pro Bono Week and volunteer lawyer service is a big part of that. As lawyers, only we can provide the services that so many people need, and they should not be prevented from getting our help because they can’t afford it.”

A key component to ensuring that everyone in Alabama has access to the legal services they need is the Alabama State Bar’s Volunteer Lawyer Program (VLP). This program was officially established by the Alabama State Bar Board of Bar Commissioners in July 1990. Today, there are four VLPs affiliated with the Alabama State Bar: those operated by the Birmingham, Mobile and Madison County Bar Associations, and the ASB VLP.
