A massive recall of more than a million pounds of ready-to-eat varieties of Italian sausage products including salami is underway because of salmonella concerns, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The recall was first announced on January 24 after Daniele Inc., a Rhode Island gourmet foods producer, received 11 reports of people who had consumed salami products contained in Daniele Italian Brand Gourmet Packs and gotten ill. Since then, the meat products have been linked to salmonella poisonings in 187 people in 38 states.

Rhode Island Department of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Saturday that the Daniele plant was meeting all food safety regulations. The source of the salmonella outbreak has not been identified, but Daniele believes be the coarse black pepper used in some of its products may be to blame. As a precaution, Daniele is recalling 18 varieties and 1.24 million pounds of meat products.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is also warning citizens that the tainted meat products may have been imported into Canada and sold in stores in Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. CFIA officials are warning consumers that while the food might not look or smell spoiled, it can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections.

The recalled products include:

• 9-ounce packages of “BLACK BEAR OF THE BLACK FOREST BABY GENOA PEPPER SALAME.”
• 20-ounce packages of “DANIELE DELI SELECTION, GENOA SALAME, SMOKED SALAME, PEPPERED SALAME, RUSTIC SALAME.”
• 340- and 454-gram packages of “DANIELE SURTIDO FINO ITALIANO, SALAMI GENOA CON PIMIENTA, LOMO CAPOCOLLO, SALAMI CALABRESE.”
• 16-ounce packages of “DANIELE ITALIAN BRAND GOURMET PACK, HOT CALABRESE, PEPPER SALAME, HOT CAPOCOLLO.”
• 8-ounce packages of “DIETZ & WATSON ARTISAN COLLECTION PARTY PLATTER PACK, HOT CALABRESE, PEPPER SALAME, HOT CAPOCOLLO.”
• 8-ounce packages of “DANIELE ITALIAN BRAND GOURMET PACK, HOT CALABRESE, PEPPER SALAME, HOT CAPOCOLLO.”
• 16-ounce packages of “DANIELE GOURMET COMBO PACK, PEPPER SALAME, CAPOCOLLO, CALABRESE.”

• 14-ounce packages of “DANIELE GOURMET ITALIAN DELI SELECTION ASSORTMENT DE FINES CHARCUTERIE ITALIENNE, SWEET SOPRESSATA SALAMI, MILANO SALAMI, SALAMI SOPRESSATA DOUX, SALAMI MILANO.”
• Catch weight packages of “DANIELE NATURALE SALAME COATED WITH COARSE BLACK PEPPER.”
• 32-ounce variety packages of “DANIELE DELI SELECTION, GENOA SALAME, SWEET SOPRESSATA, PEPPERED GENOA, MILANO SALAME.”

Each package is marked with “EST. 9992″ or “EST. 54″ inside the USDA mark of inspection. These products were distributed to retail establishments nationwide, as well as internationally.
