McNeil Consumer Products has expanded a recall of over-the-counter medicines because the products have an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor that in some cases was associated with temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal events. The recall was first initiated in December and included various products such as Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl and Rolaids, This latest recall urges consumers who may have purchased certain 100-count packages of Benadryl Allergy UlltraTab tablets and 50-count packages of Extra-Strength Tylenol Rapid Release Gels to stop using these products and contact the manufacturer about a refund or replacement.
The products that fall in the latest recall should have been included in the initial recall list, McNeil Consumer Products says. This is the second time McNeil has expanded the recall of its popular over-the-counter medicines.
McNeil Consumer Products says it has identified the source of the odor as a breakdown of a product used on the wooden crates and pallets on which the products are transported and stored. The company contends that the risk of serious adverse medical events is remote.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products may contact McNeil Consumer Products by visiting www.McNeilProductRecall.com or calling 888-222-6036 Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday-Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Consumers with medical concerns or questions should contact their healthcare provider. Any adverse reactions to this or any other drug should be reported to the FDA MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program at www.FDA.gov/MedWatch.
