Alabama Voters Against Lawsuit Abuse (AVALA) is calling for the Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb to recue herself from the Exxon Mobil case because of alleged PAC-to-PAC transfers of contributions between a plaintiff lawyer and her 2006 political campaign.

AVALA claims Cobb received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Montgomery lawyer Jere Beasley, a plaintiff lawyer in the ExxonMobil case through the PAC-to-PAC transfers. Cobb’s representative said she will not comment on an on-going case.

The Alabama Supreme Court will hear arguments Feb. 6 on a $3.6 billion judgment against Exxon Mobil. The case was initiated by the state Conservation Department in 1999 when it accused Exxon Mobil of underpaying royalties to the state for natural gas wells in state-owned waters.
