A 38-year-old male suffered the amputation of his left leg above the knee when he was struck by the male defendant's personal watercraft while stopped with his watercraft at a lakeside dock. The defendant denied liability and contended that his watercraft was defective, that he was unable to steer it when the throttle was released, and that he was unable to avoid the accident. The plaintiff contended that the defendant failed to operate his watercraft safely and keep a proper lookout.
