Talc Verdict Discussed on the Today Show

Beasley Allen Principal & Founder Jere Beasley talked to NBC’s The Today Show about the landmark verdict against Johnson & Johnson. A St. Louis jury found the company liable for ovarian cancer connected to use of its talcum powder products. They returned a verdict of $72 million on behalf of the family of Jacqueline Fox, who died at age 62 of ovarian cancer related to her daily use of talcum powder for 35 years. J&J’s own internal documents revealed experts warned them for years about the possible risks associated with the use of talcum powder for feminine hygiene, but they refused to warn consumers. Ms. Fox’s son, Marvin Salter, told NBC about his mother, “Her whole fight was not just for her, but so many other women.” The jury awarded $10 million in actual damages, and $62 million in punitive damages. The punitive verdict was a tribute to Ms. Fox’s unnecessary death. Beasley says, “They awarded $1 million for every year Ms. Fox had lived.”
