Jessi MeeksOf Counsel | Fraud
Jessi Meeks joined Beasley Allen as a lawyer in the Consumer Fraud section in October 2016. She clerked for Beasley Allen, beginning as a second year law student in March 2015. Jessi is handling cases involving Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) antitrust multidistrict litigation (MDL).
The BCBS antitrust MDL, currently pending in the Northern District of Alabama, is a broad-sweeping group of claims against the insurance giant that is divided into two tracks, one for subscribers and one for providers. Beasley Allen is working on the provider track.
The BCBS organization is comprised of separate companies that cover different geographical regions of the country, and the lawsuit claims those individual companies agreed amongst themselves to stay out of other geographic regions. For example, BCBS of Alabama and BCBS of Mississippi agreed to not compete with each other for providers (hospitals and physicians) or subscribers (individual and group policyholders). Normally, competition in a certain area drives costs down with each company trying to be the lowest available. Absent competition, the companies were able to set prices for both reimbursement and premiums at any price they chose. This litigation seeks to hold the BCBS entities accountable for their anticompetitive agreements.
In May 2016, Jessi earned her Juris Doctor from Faulkner University’s Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. She was an Admissions Dean Fellow, was on the Dean’s List, served as Student Bar Association (SBA) Vice President, and was the Student Representative on the Student Life Committee. During her time as the SBA Vice President, Jessi helped organize several philanthropic events, including Harvest Fest, where canned foods and other non-perishable items were collected and cash proceeds benefited the law school’s legal clinics; the Don Garner Charity Golf Classic, which was designed to raise money for the law school’s internal student relief fund; and an Angel Tree drive for Montgomery-area children.
Jessi earned her B.S. in Criminal Justice, with a minor in Leadership Studies, from Troy University, graduating cum laude in 2013. She was inducted into Alpha Phi Sigma for scholastic achievements in her major.
Jessi is a member of the Alabama State Bar, the Alabama State Bar Young Lawyers Section, the Alabama State Bar Women’s Section and Phi Alpha Delta International Law Fraternity.
In her free time, Jessi enjoys reading, traveling and watching college football.
