Lance began his legal career with Beasley Allen in 1997, focusing his practice in the area of consumer fraud litigation. He handled actions brought by individuals who were victimized by finance and insurance companies within the financing industry. Some of these cases included lender liability causes of action known as loan flipping, insurance packing and equity theft. Lance continues to represent homeowners who have been victims of Predatory Lending practices. These deceptive lending practices include inflating appraisals of home values, inflating incomes, charging higher interest rates than originally promised, placing customers in adjustable rate mortgages after promising a fixed rate and artificially inflating fees and closing costs.
Lance spends most of his time focused on collective actions involving the fair labor standards act. These cases involve both executive exemption and independent contractor exemption claims. In the executive exemption cases, managers were classified as executive exempt, but technically they do not qualify under executive exemption to be paid salary because their primary duty is not management. The independent contractor exemption cases involve companies misclassifying employees as independent contractors which allow employers to avoid paying certain expenses that are normally paid by an employer. For example, companies avoid paying overtime wages, training pay, workers compensation benefits, certain taxes and other employer benefits.
Lance was a member of the trial team in a landmark case involving a door to door sales and finance scam, which resulted in a verdict of $581 million. As a result of this litigation, the finance company quit these types of activities in the state of Alabama. Also, Lance has represented thousands of clients at Beasley Allen resulting in Multi-Million dollar settlements and influenced corporations to correct their improper practices.
Lance has authored publications on consumer fraud litigation and has been a guest speaker on consumer fraud litigation at both the state and national levels, including a lecture for the National Consumer Law Center. Lance also serves on the Junior Board of the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation.
